Receives the American Heart Association 2021 ‘Get with the Guidelines’ Gold Plus Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Type II Diabetes Honor Roll Awards

October 19, 2021 Ithaca, New York –Cayuga Health announced several awards in recognition of their dedicated cardiac care team and outstanding patient care. Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) is the recipient of the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2021. CMC is one of only 132 hospitals nationwide to receive this honor. In addition, they awarded with the American Heart Association 2021 ‘Get with the Guidelines’ Gold Plus Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll designations.

“These awards are a tribute to our investment into the Cayuga Heart Institute, the Cayuga Medical Center Accredited Chest Pain Center, and the outstanding cardiac care team that we are fortunate to be able to offer,” states Dr. Martin Stallone, President & CEO of Cayuga Health System. “We are truly honored to be the recipient of these significant awards, and to earn national recognition for our efforts to improve cardiovascular treatment.”

The MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement award recognizes Cayuga Health’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that they have reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award, Cayuga Health has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain  ̶   MI Registry for four consecutive quarters during 2020 and performed with distinction in specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“As a Silver Performance Award recipient, Cayuga Health has established itself as a leader in setting the national standard for improving quality of care in patients with acute myocardial infarction,” said Michael C. Kontos, MD, FACC, chair of the NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Steering Subcommittee, and cardiologist at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. “By meeting the award requirements set forth in the registry, Cayuga Health has demonstrated a commitment to providing reliable, comprehensive treatment for heart attack patients based on current clinical guideline recommendations.”

“We worked closely with the CMC Emergency Medicine Department to develop the Cayuga Medical Center STEMI team, a rapid-response team focused on immediate assessment and treatment of patients with heart attack,” states Dr. Amit Singh, Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Accredited Chest Pain Center at Cayuga Medical Center, and Physician Practice Leader for the Cayuga Heart Institute. “This CMC STEMI team, as confirmed by the nationally recognized American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain-MI registry’s recent award, has enabled us to treat heart attack patients to very high standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations, and we are proud to say ultimately improved the outcomes of heart attack patients in Tompkins, Cortland & Schuyler counties. I couldn’t be prouder of our team for receiving this award and we are all excited to continue to bring excellent quality high level heart care to all of our wonderful patients right here at Cayuga Health.”

The Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

Cayuga Medical Center also received 2 American Heart Association Gold Plus Achievement Awards 2021 – ‘Get with the Guidelines’ Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll – for implementing quality improvement measures that ensure cardiovascular patients receive efficient and coordinated care, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer returns to the hospital.

Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have experienced some form of cardiovascular disease – including heart attack, stroke and heart failure. For patients with conditions that are severe enough to be transported or admitted to a hospital, time is critical.  The American Heart Association’s Mission: ‘Lifeline’ and ‘Get with the Guidelines’ programs help reduce barriers to prompt treatment for cardiovascular events.

“We are pleased to recognize Cayuga Medical Center for their commitment to cardiovascular care,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., national chairperson of the Quality Oversight Committee and Executive Vice Chair of Neurology, Director of Acute Stroke Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the American Heart Association’s quality improvement programs often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”
