Schuyler Hospital’s Free Community Walking Program Kicking Off for 12th Year

Schuyler Steps Out – the free community walking program presented by Schuyler Hospital – is back for its 12th year, kicking off next month.

Open to anyone who works or lives in Schuyler County, the program kicks off on Friday, April 6, 2018, with an opening celebration and information session.

Teams must register with the hospital by March 30, 2018, and team representatives should plan to attend the opening celebration.

While many teams are workplace-based, service clubs, churches, and even scouts can form teams. All that’s required is walking daily for 8 weeks, logging steps walked, and reporting to the Hospital weekly.  At the end of the 8-week program, awards are given for most team steps, most valuable “players,” and most improved.

“This program was designed to get people moving in the early spring months, and it is our small way to help fight obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other associated healthcare issues in our community,” said Michelle Benjamin, Executive Director of Community Relations for Schuyler Hospital. “By encouraging walking regularly, we hope to foster healthy changes that are long-lasting, far beyond this 8-week program.”

The 2018 program will run April 9-June 10, 2018.

In 2017, participating teams tallied 103.2 million total steps, or over 51.6 thousand miles – the equivalent of 2 trips around the Earth. Around 142 people from 11 teams participated in the 8-week program.

Schuyler Steps Out is sponsored by Schuyler Hospital and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
