Schuyler Hospital’s Free Community Walking Program Kicking Off for 16th Year
Team Registration Deadline March 31
Schuyler Steps Out is open to anyone who works or lives in Schuyler County. The deadline for team registration is Thursday, March 31, 2022. The Virtual kick-off and information session is Wednesday, April 13. The 2022 program will run from April 18 through June 12.
While many teams are workplace-based, service clubs, churches, and even scouts can form teams. Participants walk daily for eight weeks, log steps walked, and report team steps weekly to the hospital. At the end of the 8-week program, awards are given for most team steps, most valuable “players,” and most improved.
The program encourages people to walk regularly and implement healthier habits to fight obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other inactivity-related health issues. In addition, program organizers hope the challenge fosters healthy changes that last beyond the 8-week competition.
In 2021, 103 people from 10 teams participating teams tallied nearly 5 million total steps, or over 2.5 thousand miles — just over the length of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail stretching from Maine to Georgia.
Schuyler Steps Out is sponsored by Schuyler Hospital and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
